Orangutan Island:
Samboja Lestari established 6 Orangutan Island with feeding sites and extra enrichment for a chronically ill orangutans that ontherwise have to spend the rest of their
lives in cages. The orangutans that cannot be returned to the wild can live here under almost natural conditions. At Samboja Lestari the Orang Utan are kept on six man-made islands (a nice walk from the Samboja Lodge). The Island that can be visited is the one with the orangutans that cannot be released in the wild, due to handicaps and behavior. There is a 2 meter wide canal around the island and visitors can view the Orang Utans from across the canal. They can be viewed and photographed very well in a safe way as well for the Orang Utan as for the visitor. Orang Utan that are prepared for release in the wild are on islands away from contact with visitors. Every day workers bring over many kinds of fruits, vegetables and leafy branches. Though there is No direct Contact for Visitors permitted with any of the orangutans. The Samboja Lodge’s guide will assist you to the island on the first visit and can explain about the project.

Sun Bear Sanctuary:
After the visit to the Orang Utan Island you will go to the Sun bear compound. The Sun bear
sanctuary is fenced by electric wiring and divided into several compartments to accommodate bears of different ages and sex. There is a bridge over the enclosure from which you can observe the behavior of the Sun Bear. Activities at the sun bear compound will begin at 8am and end at 4pm. The Sanctuary is a short 15min walk from the Samboja Lodge. You must exercise extreme caution when around the bears.

After this activity, you also may have optional excursions such as :

Nature Trails - 2 hours
There are a number of other animal species in Samboja Lestari that have returned to this regenerating forest. Some of the animals you might spot on guided walks early morning and late afternoon through our Nature Trail are: birds, lizards and snakes (blood pythons), small mammals (deer and pigs) and many amazing insects (walking sticks, beautiful butterflies, millipedes etc.). You might even spot wild primates newly arrived to the area such as gibbons, macaques (2 species), and proboscis and red leaf monkeys.

Sungai Hitam (Black River) - 2-3 hours tour:
Sungai Hitam is best visited in the early morning and late afternoon. Following a 30 minute drive from Samboja Lestari you take a boat ride along the Sungai Hitam tidal river to see highly endangered Proboscis monkeys and other wildlife. Local fisherman will guide you on this tidal river. The fisherman will have a daily income for their services.

Bird Watching - 2,5 hours tour:
As a part of East Borneo, Samboja Lestari has more than 30 species of birds, such as: Zebra Dove, Black & Red Broadbill, Cressted and Cresstelss Fireback, swallow, and etc. Walking around in the morning with binocular and bird's list, make sure you are completing the list. Move quietly and enjoy how fantastic they are. Especially swallow, here you can see them closely. Visiting a local swallow house to learn more about how they live, build a nest from the saliva, caring the baby and interact with the nature.

Bukit Bengkirai Canopy Bridge - 4 hours tour:
One-hour drive from Samboja Lestari is the forest park of Bukit Bangkirai. Visitors can take short forest walks and climbing into the forest canopy using connecting bridges to a height of 40 meters. Platform provide a perfect vantage point for observing macaques, leaf monkeys, maroon langurs, gibbons and hornbills.

Sungai Wain – Halfday tour:
Less than one hour drive from Samboja Lestari lies the protected forest area of Sungai Wain. This was the first release site of BOS Foundation where 75 rehabilitated orangutans were released between 1992-1998. Several female orangutans with babies have been observed on previous visits. Since they are totally wild again, there is no 100% guarantee that you will see one of those released orangutans on this trip.
